So the other day I was given the chance to interview Caitlin Boyle. For those who don't know who she is- she is the founder of Operation Beautiful, a program to encourage people to stop negative talk against themselves, or in her words, "Fat Talk."I asked her 10 questions on how to stay healthy and active, about Operation Beautiful and about some tips to help encourage positive thoughts. First off was what inspired her to start Operation Beautiful. She was having a bad day and she just wanted to do something nice for someone. So she took a sticky note and wrote, "You are beautiful" on it and stuck it to the mirror of a bathroom. Afterwards, she took a picture and posted it on her blog. Next was how often she heard people complaining about their weight, figure, complexion, etc. Most of you probably hear the "Fat Talk" every day, all around you. The same occurs with Caitlin. People comment on her blogs every day struggling with negative feelings and they ask for her help. Operation Beautiful is a website aimed towards ending negative talk. This website has many things to help you out including "Change the Way You See" and "Participate", but there are many things that the average person may not know. She first started Operation Beautiful from her laptop at home. Every morning she wakes up and checks her email. In her mailbox every morning are dozens of stories from people all over the world talking about their experiences and/or feelings. She replies to each and every one of the emails she receives and then posts those notes to her blog. It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for that note to appear on the blog. But with all those emails, the major thing that has really stuck out is that people all over the world feel the same way about themselves. "You can have a teenager in Mali," says Caitlin, "feeling the same way as a teenager in Guam." There are people out there who read her blogs but still can't break through those negatives. So the first thing she recommends is to acknowledge that you're doing it. It's important to realize just how damaging it is to you emotionally. The "Fat Talk" not only hurts us, but it also hurts those around us. The next thing she can recommend is to replace negative thoughts with something positive that is also realistic. Don't go and say that you're the most perfect, pretty, cool person out there, but instead say that you are perfect in your own special way and you look good the way you are. You shouldn't have to change you to please someone else. I also brought some of my life into the conversation. Some of things I do to stay in shape are competitive clogging and competitive skiing. She wants people to find activities that are fun. Don't think of exercises as chores like she used to do. She used to think that exercises were just "boring times in a gym." Some things teenage girls, and really all people, can do are gardening, horseback riding, volunteering at a local animal shelter, and hanging with friends and doing activities. The best thing physically you can do for your body is to eat real food, not "packaged fake, fatty food." Mentally, the best thing you can do is to accept who you are and embrace yourself. To stay in shape you need to move every day in little bits. Don't overwhelm yourself with too much in one day. On her blog she writes about her change from college to now. Now she is much more in shape then she was a few years ago. I asked her if it was hard to make that change and she said not really because she took it little by little. "Don't overhaul your life in one day." Every two weeks she'd change up her activity. She also has a list of "20 Ways to Love Your Body." Of these 20, number eight was the most important to her. Number eight reads, "Count your blessings, not your blemishes." She shared a story with me about watching her friend do a ½ Iron Man a few weeks ago. At one point the contestants were all running out of the water but one was crawling because she was disabled. Two of the officials came to help her out because she couldn’t use her legs. Just be thankful for what you have and realize there is always going to be someone else out there that isn't as privileged as you. To top the healthy lifestyle talk off, we conclude with her favorite recipe out of the 13 posted on her website. Her favorite one is the grilled banana sandwich because it not only tastes good but it is really healthy for you as well, "If you don't put too much maple syrup on it :)." I had a wonderful time interviewing Caitlin and I hope you enjoyed reading this. Check out her websites at http://operationbeautiful.com/ and&nb sp; www.HealthyTippingPoint.com In Caitlin's words, "If this little blog only does one productive thing, I hope it helps readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is — it hurts you emotionally, spiritually, and physically. " YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

It is especially hard for me because I wanna be famous someday and if my body is not fit, then it could start gossip. The best way you can lose weight and have fun is to dance at least every other day and go shopping whenever you have the money. Just carrying bags and walking from store to store can help you lose weight easily. When you are eating, try avoiding junk food and anything with meat. Also, if you try a method to lose weight stick with that method, so you won't lose any weight. Hope this helps! ” |
